Van Boening Wins World 10-Ball Championship
Just one week after a runner up finish at the Enjoypool.com 9-Ball Championship, Shane Van Boening improved his nearly top performance to take down the Predator World 10-Ball Championship.
The tournament drew 96 players to Bankshot Billiards, including pre-event favorites Dennis Orcollo, Francisco Bustamante, Johnny Archer, Marlon Manalo, Mika Immonen, Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann. Few thought the unknown, despite that second place, would grab a title so soon..
Van Boening won his first three matches but was sent to the one-loss side by Danny Harriman after a 10-7 loss. Undaunted, he scored victories over Luc Salvas and Stefan Cohen, 10-3, and a narrow 10-9 defeat over Lee Van Cortezza. That put him in the single elimination portion of the tournament.
Wins over Niels Feijen and Warren Kiamco set up a rematch with Dennis Orcollo -- who defeated Van Boening 7-0 in the Enjoypool.com finals. This time, Van Boening hung tough to win 11-9.
The final match between Van Boening and Cliff Joyner was a see-saw battle that kept the fans guessing. It was 11-11 before Van Boening pulled two final games out of his hat for a 13-3 title victory! (Photo ©2007 David Thomson mediumpool.com)
