Williams Defeats Archer for Lucasi Hybrid 10-Ball Title!
The Lucasi Hybrid Invitational Classic 10-Ball event at Bankshot Billiards in Jacksonville, Florida, held in conjunction with the Ozone Amateur Championships, Junior Championships, and the Lucasi 14.1 Invitational (taken down by Thorsten Hohmann) was promoted by Dragon Promotions, which is, as most of us know, an operation led by ambitious pro Charlie Williams (himself a former junior champ!) Maybe it should be no surprise then that said Charlie, in between running several events, played his way through the full field of 48 to win his own event. Doesn't seem fair, does it? Then again, who better to take home the $4,000 than the guy who threw the party?!
All tongue-in-cheek aside, this was no easy feat for Williams. Powerhouses Shane Van Boening (defending champ) and multiple Player of the Year Johnny Archer faced off for the winner's side, with Archer emerging the 9-7 victor in a heated battle. That sent the defender packing to the one loss side where Williams was plodding through the bracket, taking down names like Dennis Orcollo, Mike Davis and Tony Crosby on his way to the Van Boening face-off.
Van Boening was planning a revenge match against Archer. Charlie saw it differently. In a match that had the crowds in sweater's heaven, Charlie emerged the victor in a hill-hill nailbiter. He moved to the championship round and saw a more decisive victory over Archer, winning the match, cash and title by a final score of 10-5!
Who says you can't be a promoter AND a player? Not this reporter... and certainly not Charlie Williams! Congrats to the Dragon on a hard-fought victory.
