Billiards superstar Jeanette Lee, known throughout the world as “The Black Widow,” will be inducted into the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) Hall of Fame on Wednesday, Feb. 6 prior to the start of the 2013 WPBA Masters at Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Lee, who has won over 30 national and international titles, is currently ranked as the No. 3 billiards player in the world.

Taking the sport by storm, Lee captured the nation’s attention in 1998 after being named “WPBA Sportsperson of the Year” and earning “Player of the Year” honors from Pool & Billiard Magazine. In 2001, Lee was crowned as the World Games Gold Medalist and continued her success in 2003 by clenching the Tournament of Champions title. As she accumulated tournament victories, Lee quickly ascended to No. 1 in the world.

“Being inducted into the WPBA Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors a player can receive,” said Lee. “It's a part of history and to be voted on and recognized in this way by my peers on the tour means so much to me. While I do feel I've contributed to this sport, I still want to continue to bring new eyes to the game and help it grow. Thank you to the WPBA and ESPN for giving me the platform to do so, and I thank God, my family, friends, sponsors, past and present, and of course, my fans, for being there through it all.”

As the most recognized face in billiards, Lee has been consistently ranked as one of the most powerful people in the sport by Billiards Digest. Lee is currently working to reclaim her rank as the No. 1 billiards player in the world while raising a family of six with her doubles partner and husband, George near Indianapolis, IN.

Among her mentors are the late Gene Nagy, pros Tony Robles, Bob Carman, Jerry Briesath, and Mark Wilson. Said Jeanette, “There are so many others that I have learned from, I want them all to know they were and are appreciated but these names are the ones that I have spent the most time with and really molded my love of the game, in both knowledge, fundamentals and winning attitude!”

The WPBA Masters will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN3 on Sunday, February 10.

2013 Super Billiards Expo Moves to New Jersey

June 18, 2012 · 3 Comments

News Flash! The 2013 Super Billiards Expo will be held April 4-7, at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison, NJ.

The site is 15 minutes from Newark International Airport and very close to a confluence of major highways, including the New Jersey State Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

"We tried to work with Oaks to improve things that we needed changed, but they responded by wanting to give us less space," said Allen Hopkins, the event promoter.

"The new location will have carpeted ballrooms for the 3-Cushion and Trick Shot events, and carpeted areas for other events, including the ACA banquet room. There are more bathrooms and better lighting, and parking is good. Overall it's simply a much nicer facility and I think everyone will be pleased. The host hotels, a nice Sheraton and a Hilton, will be running shuttles to the expo."

Predator World Tournament of Straight Pool in New York this August

May 28, 2012 · 1 Comment

This year’s event, July 29 – Aug 3, 2012, will be the "biggest international 14.1 event in the world." Dragon Promotions, in partnership with Dr. Michael Fedak, will produce the tournament in New York City at Carom Cafe in Queens. The well renown billiard room will host the greatest straight pool players from around the world. Sixty-four top-notch 14.1 masters will arrive on American soil to play for the coveted title of greatest straight pool player in the world.

Championship Cloth, Olhausen Tables, and Aramith Balls are joining together in support of the Predator 72nd World Tournament of Straight Pool. Championship Cloth has been selected as this year’s cloth for the first time, while Olhausen comes on board for the second straight year as the table sponsor. Aramith has been the ball of choice for the event for all seven years now since the World Tournament’s revival in 2006.

“We are all very excited to team up with Dragon Promotions and be a part of this historic event! Championship Cloth has always cared about organized competitions, but now I want to revitalize the relationship with Championship and the pros, the fans, and the sport. Though we have dominated the home market for years, we feel it’s equally important to give back to the sport and also show the world class quality of our Tour Edition 3030 Cloth. What better way then showing it off at the 72nd World Tournament!" said Mike Serra, Vice-President of Championship Cloth and current Chairman of the Billiard Congress of America. Serra added, “I’ve personally attended several major pool tournaments this year to get more in tune with all parts of the industry. And I must say, it’s exhilarating. All of us want to do more to support the play side, and we do see the benefits. So look for more from Championship Cloth in the very near future.”

“Mike Serra and the Championship Cloth family are awesome. Besides being a fabulous manufacturer of high grade pro cloth, they are also helping us continue one of the oldest traditions in billiards. Mike has been spending a lot of time at pool tournaments and trying to get insight and solutions to help the entire billiard industry. I really respect his initiative and willingness to get in the mix,” said Charlie Williams, pro tour veteran and Founder of Dragon Promotions.

Olhausen Tables is once again sponsoring the event. They join European ball manufacturer Aramith and Predator Cues as repeat industry supporters. “Olhausen is looking forward to continuing our support of pool as the official table of the 72nd World Tournament of 14.1. Last year’s event was highly successful and Olhausen wants to be a part of Dragon Promotions efforts in keeping Straight Pool’s long tradition in the world. The World Tournament’s move to New York City is exciting for all of us, and we are glad to keep it on US soil," said Donny Olhausen, founder and owner of Olhausen Tables.

Sponsorship and vendor spaces are still available. Martin & Keogh Inducted into Straight Pool Hall of Fame

August 22, 2011 · No Comments

Three time World 14.1 Champion Ray "Cool Cat" Martin and 14.1 Continuous inventor Jerome Keogh (left) will be the very first inductees into the Straight Pool Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place August 31, 2011 at 5 p.m. at a dinner banquet at the Hyatt Regency Hotel during the 71st World Tournament of 14.1. Keogh will be inducted posthumously while Martin will be there live to accept his award and speak. Even better, Martin will participate in the World Tournament as a competitor at age 76.

"Its a great honor to be inducted. It’s nice that people still alive will be inducted as well in the future. That's really the way it should be. Get them in before they die! Let them enjoy it!" said Martin (right). Ray won the World Tournament in 1971, 1974, and 1978. Martin also won numerous 9-Ball titles, is a BCA Hall of Fame inductee and the author of the famed 99 Critical Shots instructional pool book.

"There were many factors on why we decided to start this inaugural Straight Pool Hall of Fame. We wanted to honor not only obvious choices, but to remember great players that are still alive and remind them that they are not forgotten,” said Charlie Williams, Founder of Dragon Promotions. “They are living treasures of the sport. Also, we wanted to recognize those who may not receive recognition elsewhere, but were huge parts of 14.1 history."

Jerome Keogh invented 14.1 in 1910. Previous to that, players would break the balls open but sometimes nothing went in, which many felt was too big a luck factor. Keogh decided the game should be played with the final ball remaining out. Thus 14 balls plus 1, which became known as 14.1. The very first World 14.1 Tournament was held in 1911 and won by Alfredo DeOro. Keogh had prior to that won multiple World Championships, but despite inventing the game that changed the sport, he would never win the World 14.1 title. Today, a hundred years later, the Straight Pool Hall of Fame honors him fittingly as the founder of the game.

"Over the last six years, the fans, players, and sponsors have really made us feel like the caretakers of straight pool. I'm not a pool player, but I've learned to really come to enjoy and respect this elegant game. We want to continue keeping this game alive and make it prosper. Honoring the people who did it before us is a big part of that," explains Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions.

Guest speakers at the dinner banquet on August 31 will include former World Champions and veteran peers of Ray's; Allen Hopkins, Mike Sigel, and Earl Herring. The 14.1 Hall of Fame events will also include video presentations by NYCGrind.com's Jerry Tarantola and funded by Dr. Louis Pannullo. Charlie Williams will MC the evening's festivities.

The 2011 World Tournament is proudly co-sponsored by Olhausen Tables, Amsterdam Billiards, Inside Pool Magazine, Andy Cloth, Aramith Balls, Kamui, Pool & Billiard Magazine, Sandcastle Billiards and straight pool aficionados Bill Austin of UT, Dr.Louis Pannullo of NY, Ralph Rubin of MD. Co-contributors include Dennis Walsh, Dr.James Heller, Charles Eames, Mark Snodgrass, and Bill Marapolous. For more information on player registration, sponsorship, or if you would like to submit a comment, please email worldstraightpoolchampionships@gmail.com or contact Dragon Promotions at 1-407-782-4978.

WPA World 9-Ball Championships in Quatar Begin June 21st

June 17, 2011 · No Comments

The center of the pool universe moves to one of the most vibrant places in the Middle East next week, as the World Pool Association’s World 9-ball Championship gets set to kick off in Doha, Qatar, June 21--July 1.  128 of the finest pool talents from 44 countries will gather at Doha’s Al Sadd Sports Club to contest what is widely considered as one of the most prestigious titles in the sport.  The prize fund is $250,000 with $36,000 going to the winner. The Philippines Francisco “Django” Bustamante (pictured) will be back to defend his crown, which he won last year in Doha with a convincing 13-7 over Chinese-Taipei’s  Kuo Po Cheng. Prior to the event, the popular Bustamante had long been considered the greatest player to never win a world title.  He won his finals match in spectacular fashion by pocketing the 9-ball on the break in the 20th rack to capture the long sought after crown. Just weeks after he won the World 9-Ball Championship in Qatar, Bustamante cemented his legend when he was elected to the Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame.
